Newborn Clothes Checklist (Layette)

The following is a list of the recommended newborn clothes, feeding and bedding items that a newborn baby will require in the first few weeks. This list is also known as a layette. If you want to make life easier then buy machine washable clothing as this will save time and money washing pieces separately.

Newborn Clothes :
5 to 10 sets of rompers or onesies (a one piece that covers feet to shoulders) This amount can depend on how often you plan on doing the clothes washing.
5 to 7 sets of nightgowns or sleepers.
1 sleeper for colder weather if necessary.
5 to 7 pairs of baby socks
1 or 2 hats, fabric and thickness dependent on climate.

Baby Needs:
You will need enough cloth or disposable diapers for two days at least. 2 packs should be enough as newborns can use up to 10 diapers a day.
One pack of disposable or cloth wipes.
A waterproof diaper changing pad.
3 to 5 wash cloths.
1 to 2 towels can be hooded and adult towels are good too.
Nail clippers for babies
One digital thermometer

3 to 4 lightweight blankets
1 or 2 heavy blankets, thus depending on the climate of where you live.
10 burp cloths
5 to 8 bottles if you are bottle-feeding
A breastfeeding pillow for comfort if desired

It may be overwhelming with all the newborn clothes products that are available today. Many of the items on the list can be narrowed down to a few as many are more want items then are actually needed. Keep your list simple as you baby will be just as happy with a basic list of items he or she needs.
